Welcome To the Policy Blotter!

Welcome to the ASBMB Policy Blotter, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s science policy blog.

ASBMB knows that the decisions of our government affect biomedical and scientific researchers.  Each year the Congress and the President decide how much money will be allocated for research in agencies like the NIH, NSF, DOE, USDA and others.  Federal rules governing stem cell research, gene patenting, or conflict of interest dictate how scientists must go about their research and what they can do with their discoveries.  When teachers, school boards, universities and others make decisions about science education, it affects our ability to train the next generation of scientists who will make the scientific breakthroughs of tomorrow.

ASBMB’s public affairs office is on the ground, in the trenches, keeping you informed about what’s going on in Washington and advocating for the biomedical and scientific research community.  This blog will keep you up to date with the news affecting our community.

But ASBMB wants to hear from you!  Using the blog, you’ll be able to comment on articles and posts and tell us what you think.  We want each of our more than 11,000 members and the biomedical community at large to feel free to comment on the items they see on this page.  Our success as advocates will continue to rely upon the enthusiastic support and input of our members and the community.

Check back frequently for news and discussions about current science policy issues.  We look forward to a vibrant and ongoing discussion.
