On July 8, ASBMB and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology asked their members to urge members of Congress to support a $37 billion budget for the National Institutes of Health in 2011.
Members were encouraged to contact their representatives as the appropriations process begins to accelerate in the U.S. House. Two of the 12 annual appropriations bills already have been considered by subcommittees of the House Appropriations Committee. The bill containing the NIH budget may be taken up as early as next week.
In a letter the Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee that oversees the NIH budget FASEB President William Talman, reiterated that message, arguing that a $37 billion budget for the NIH is necessary “to ensure that progress is not curtailed.”
