National Academies releases report on graduate STEM education
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a series of recommendations to improve graduate STEM education for the 21st century. The report includes a description of an ideal graduate education and a list of recommendations for multiple stakeholders such as universities and professional societies to implement. The recommendations highlight the need for increased diversity, better mental health resources, and improved career development resources. Read the report here.
National Academies explores how to punish sexual harassers
The NAS will explore changing its bylaws to expel academy members who have committed sexual harassment. Previously, NAS declined to remove members because they had been elected to lifelong terms. More than 2,700 people have signed a petition urging NAS to remove members who have been “sanctioned for sexual harassment, retaliation, and assault.” Read more here.
