The ASBMB Responds to NIH’s Update on Efforts to Combat Sexual Harassment in Science

The following is a statement from Benjamin Corb, public affairs director for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

“Today, National Institutes of Health Director Francis S. Collins provided an update to the scientific community regarding the NIH’s efforts to address sexual harassment.  The NIH should be commended for the steps they are taking to improve the climate for researchers in the life sciences.  The NIH has been, by their own admission, slow in responding to the community’s demands for action.  Today’s update provides us with hope that they are now prepared to work with the community to take meaningful steps to support scientists and ensure an open and safe environment for people of all backgrounds.

We look forward to partnering with the NIH’s Working Group of the Advisory Council to the Director on Changing the Culture to End Sexual Harassment to develop policies that will finally curtail instances of sexual harassment in science.”
