Last night, the Department of Labor issued a new rule on overtime pay.  Effective December 1, 2016, the criteria under which employees will be eligible for overtime pay will be: The salary threshold for eligibility for overtime pay will rise from $455 per week to $913 per week ($47,476 per year). The decline of the postdoc population and research enterprise sustainability

A recent paper published in the FASEB Journal presents data demonstrating the population of postdoctoral scholars at degree-granting institutions peaked in 2010 and has been declining through 2013. These data are derived from the National Science Foundation’s annual Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates. The data show that the decline in the number of postdocs at U.S. degree-granting institutions has occurred for international and domestic postdocs as well as men and women, although, the decline is steepest among U.S. men….
