National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” carried a story yesterday that is critical of the use of stimulus funds for scientific research. Primarily, it criticizes stimulus research dollars for creating few jobs and for the slow pace at which they are spent. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, defends research stimulus funding. He notes that NIH stimulus funds will create or retain an estimated 50,000 jobs. More importantly, Collins points out that stimulus funds for research are making discoveries that will better human health.
